Laser Surgery-Less Pain
Why we do our surgeries with light?
Your pet's health is important to us as it is to you. We are pleased to offer laser surgery as an exciting new option for safe, comfortable treatment.
We use CO2 Laser light to cut precisely, instead of using
the traditional scalpel knife. When we use laser, we cause minimal to no
bleeding. Laser separates and seals the nerve endings, causing less pain. Surgeon
has good visual of the surgical site with minimal to no bleeding. It is not
possible to see through blood. Saves time-surgeon not wasting valuable time
mopping the gushing blood when we use
laser. Traditional scalpel blade surgery is like cutting with a knife-causing
blunt trauma in addition to cutting. Procedures like removing cancerous tumors
with a large, complicated blood supply, declaw surgery or elongated soft palate
resection in Brachycephalic breeds like English Bull dogs, laser surgery is the
only gold standard.
In many procedures, the laser can replace the scalpel and provide a better alternative to traditional surgery.
Are Lasers New?
Lasers have been successfully used on human for over 30 years. This human experience is proving to be beneficial for pets and their owners. We are pleased to be among the firs veterinary practices to offer laser surgery specifically for pets.
What Types of Procedures Can a Laser Perform?
A laser is ideal for a wide variety of surgical procedures for dogs, cats, birds and other pets. Laser surgery can correct many common conditions such as cysts, tumors, warts and infections that may occur around the eyes, ears, in the mouth, and anywhere on the skin. Specialized internal procedures are also possible. Your veterinarian will be able to tell you if your pet's procedure can be performed with a laser.
What Is A Laser ?
A laser is a device that generates an intense beam of light at a specific wavelength.
How Does A Laser Work ?
The way a particular laser works is determined by the specific wavelength of light that it produces. For example, the most commonly used surgical laser is a CO2 laser which produces an invisible beam of light that vaporizes the water normally found in the skin and other soft tissue. Because your veterinarian can precisely control the laser, only a thin layer of tissue is removed, leaving the surrounding areas unaffected.
The advantages of laser surgery are:
1. Minimal to no bleeding resulting in clear view of surgical field allowing the surgeon to perform precise surgical procedure
2. Less Pain
3. Quick return to normal activities. Recovery is rapid
4. Minimal Scar Tissue Formation
5. Less Trauma to Tissue
6. Less Swelling
7. Shorter surgery and anesthesia time
8. Shorter hospitalization
9. Laser also offers surgical options not otherwise available for some conditions such as elongated soft palate, stenotic nares, oral tumors, ear canal tumors and lick granulomas
10. Reduces risk of infection. The laser sterilizes as it removes diseased tissue, killing bacteria that cause infection
11. Precision. The laser can remove unhealthy tissue while minimizing adverse effects on healthy surrounding tissue
